By day, Chris Nicola is a senior investigator for the State of New York. In his off time, he’s an avid caver. Nicola had heard of some unusual caves in Ukraine, and being of Ukrainian descent, he decided to explore. What he found 70 feet underground were artifacts of normal human life — a shoe, a key, a comb. These were the remnants of 38 Jews who had sheltered in the cave during the Nazi occupation, miraculously escaping capture.
Nicola now runs The Priest’s Grotto Heritage Project, which educates about the Holocaust using the story of the cave. With the help of a National Geographic photographer, he created a book, "The Secret of the Priest’s Grotto - A Holocaust Survival Story," and helped create a documentary film, "No Place on Earth."
Nicola will be on the St. Mary’s University campus on Wednesday, Oct. 4, for a 6:30 p.m. screening of the documentary followed by a Q&A.
The campus is invited to attend. Watch the University calendar for more information. For more information on Chris Nicola, see his website ChrisNicola.com.
